It is 2026, and I am still here, still a normal player, still absolutely incapable of scoring a single goal in Lucioball. Blizzard, in their infinite wisdom, has decided to bring back the Overwatch Summer Games this year. The event drops on July 20 and runs until August 10. I know those dates by heart because every summer I tell myself this will be the year I finally learn how to aim a Lucio gun at a glowing ball. It never happens. 😭

The fan-favorite Arcade mode is returning, and yes, it is Lucioball. For the uninitiated, Lucioball is basically football (or soccer for my American friends) but with a twist that should be illegal. Instead of kicking the ball with your feet like a sane person, you blast it with Lucio's sonic amplifier. And everyone is Lucio. Everyone. There are no other heroes. It is a pitch full of wall-riding, speed-boosting frog DJs trying to boop a giant ball into a goal. If that sounds chaotic, that's because it is. The movement speed is cranked up, the arena is futuristic, and the only thing standing between you and glory is your complete lack of hand-eye coordination. I speak from experience. 🐸⚽

Now let's talk about the real reason I play this event: the skins. Blizzard has already revealed a bunch of new cosmetics on social media, and my wallet is already crying. 💸

Here is a quick breakdown because I love making tables when I am excited:

Mermaid Symmetra looks exactly like it sounds, which means I will be spending an unreasonable amount of in-game currency to make her look like a sea queen. 🧜‍♀️ Poolside Ashe is more casual, like she just wandered off a beach party to join a firefight. Honestly, that's the energy I need in my life. And then there is Sprinkles Mei. She wears a classic ice cream truck uniform. She even has the little white hat. I don't know why that hat makes me emotional, but it does. 🍦

The old favorites are also coming back for anyone who missed them the first time around. You can grab Sand Castle Bastion, Catcher Winston, Lifeguard McCree, and Gridironhardt. Quick side note: calling him Lifeguard McCree feels weird in 2026 because the cowboy formerly known as McCree has been Cassidy for years now. It's like seeing an old yearbook photo. Still, the skin is fun. Gridironhardt leans into American football with a Reinhardt getup that makes him even more imposing than usual. As a normal player, I will absolutely equip Reinhardt's American football skin and then immediately charge off the map. It's tradition. 🏈

You can buy these new skins with in-game currency, which is generous in theory but dangerous in practice. They will also be available in the Summer-themed loot boxes that replace the standard ones during the event. So if you enjoy gambling with virtual currency and then crying over duplicate sprays, this is your moment. I will definitely be opening a few. Or a few dozen. I have a problem. 🎁

There are also three sets of weekly challenges to tackle. Blizzard has not revealed exactly what they are yet, but if history is any guide, they will follow the usual pattern: three wins, six wins, and nine wins. Each milestone usually nets you a themed item. Typically, that means a player icon, a spray, and then a skin. One year, week one was themed around an epic skin for Tracer, the Union Jack one. The point is, weekly challenges are a reliable way to earn stuff without spending credits. You just have to win matches. And in Lucioball, winning matches requires your entire team to remember that you score by blasting the ball into the opponent's goal, not by clustering around it like confused bees. Honestly, the Summer Games is one of my favorite Overwatch events even if Lucioball makes me want to throw my keyboard. The vibes are immaculate. The skins are ridiculous in the best way. The limited-time mode is pure, unfiltered chaos. And the challenges give me a reason to keep queuing even after I have embarrassed myself for the tenth time.
